I've had this UPS for well over a year, and a number of times I've heard it powering up in response to some power glitch, so it's protected me from who-knows-what. I love having this business class heavy duty UPS protecting my two very valuable computers in my office. Given all that's invested in the PC's, this big chunk of piece of mind was a good investment.
It is most definitely not for your average home user, but for those who need something with a lot more power I highly recommend it. This thing greatly surpassed my expectations. I am a freelance web developer and have tons of electronics in my room so I needed something powerful. With all of the previous stated stuff plus my 37" HDTV and my PS3 on it will last for about 15 minutes. This UPS is just plain awesome, hands down. I have had it for a few months now and it has saved me so many times during power outages and brownouts. With my desktop, home server, two 22" LCD monitors, router, printer, phone, and stereo all plugged in and on this thing will last about 25 minutes.
Instead of instant popup info during a power loss, you've got to waste time accessing the web to determine your UPS status.For use by an IT dept or techie, this is great, but for home use I should have selected another UPS make with more user friendly interface This was clearly designed for higher end business use (vs home use). It is quiet, and starts up quickly. That is where I am disappointed with this. I'm annoyed that I 'had' to buy this because Dell decided to put a power supply in my new home computer (Dell Studio XPS 435T) that needed a sine wave from the UPS - normally only needed for critical servers or medical equipment.
Instead of nice popup graphics (from the tray icon) for alerts or status like the Personal Edition of Power Chute has, the Business version requires accessing the web with a password (if you remember it) and gives plain text information. Loading the software was easier than expected (after reading the extensive instructions). So my perfectly good APC Back-UPS XS 1500 was no longer good enough, despite Dell actually spec'ing the Back-UPS as an optional accessory with my new computer. It seems to be working ok. Although this Smart UPS is over 3x the cost of the Back-UPS, I was able to find a used one.There haven't been any major power disruptions, but it runs the self test ok, and passes the pull-the-plug-from-the-wall test.
The Business Edition of the software seems to have extensive logging, tracking and external communicating abilities, but that is not what a home user wants.
They are heavy and fail all the time. We had 30 of this devices in the office. APC SUpport is inexistent.
It has already saved me during one severe thunderstorm so I'm quite pleased with the product. This product has worked great and the price was outstanding. Despite the high shipping cost because of the weight, the price was still great. My last APC Smart UPS 1500 kept acting up despite putting in a new battery so I was hesitant to buy another one. The price here was better than the trade in/trade-ups price American Power Conversion was offering so I decided to try it. I bought it from Tiger Direct since Amazon was not selling it directly.
